Mt Rob Roy Challenge
Tuggeranong ACT

Sunday 20 May 2007

Race report:

A powerful performance in today’s Mt Rob Roy Challenge by Canberra’s Vanessa Haverd showed that she will be hard to beat in next month’s Australian Mountain Running Championship on Mt Majura. Haverd slashed more than seven minutes off her own course record to clock 66mins 57 secs and average just over 5 minutes per kilometre for the gruelling 13km. A five minutes per kilometre average for the 9km Australian Championship course should be fast enough for victory.

Only just over one minute behind in 68:02 was former Australian mountain running representative Angela Bateup, a national junior track champion in her teens. Elle Knight was third in 90:39.

World M50 long distance mountain running champion Trevor Jacobs proved too strong for the rest of the field in the men’s race, running 63:08 to be only 6 seconds slower than the course record of orienteering international Ben Rattray. David Hosking was runner-up in 64:40 with Scott Imhoff third in 66:28.

The 7km race included the ACT Junior Mountain Running Championship, won by Greg Hosking in 39:55, and the ACT Super Veterans Championships. Sue Archer won the W55 championship in 42.35, Julie Colbran the W50 in 63:51, Geoff Barker the M60 in 44:37, Clive Glover the M65 in 45:27 and Bob Chapman the M70 in 46:17.
