Saturday 16 June 2007

National steeplechaser Scott McTaggart of North Canberra Gungahlin Athletics Club won the Australian men's mountain running title for the third year in a row, completing the three-lap, 13.3 km course on Mt Majura in Canberra in 59:01. McTaggart led from start to finish but for the first two laps Wollongong's Stephen Brown of Kembla Joggers was only 50 metres in arrears. He finished second in 59:56 and former Australian junior cross country champion Mark Bourne of Woden Harriers was third in 61:24, half a minute ahead of a fast finishing Stuart Doyle of South Canberra Tuggeranong Athletics Club.

Queensland veteran Hubertien Wichers of Ashgrove Rangers followed up her third placing in the Australian Trail Running Championships by taking out the Australian women's title over 9kms in 48:04 after a close contest with Cindy King of Randwick Botany Harriers and ACT runners Angela Bateup and Vanessa Haverd. King ran a scintillating last lap to claim 2nd in 48:41, 14 seconds ahead of Bateup in third. Haverd, who led early on the second lap, experienced quad problems on the downhill and had to be content with 4th in 49:26. World rogaining champion Heather Logie of Canberra was 5th in 50:01.

Junior championship winners Matthew Bayley and Veronica Wallington clocked times that would have been medal winning at the World Junior Mountain Running Championships in Wellington, New Zealand, two years ago. Bayley of Knox Athletics Club ran 38:02 for the junior men's 9kms, with runners-up Cameron Page and Ben Guest of Gosford Athletics Club also world class with times of 39:25 and 40:37.

Wallington of St George Runners smashed the senior women's 9km course record with a time of 46 minutes in May. In the one lap Australian Junior 4.5kms, she ran a sizzling 22:09. Lara Tamsett of Sydney Uni was second in 23:58 and Lauren McKillop of Randwick Botany third in 24:28.

The veteran age groups saw many outstanding performances apart from Hubertien Wichers' open championship triumph. World M50 long distance mountain running champion Trevor Jacobs won the M55 8.8kms in 44:43 and kept going to finish 6th outright in the open men's 13.3kms in 68:31. Western Australian Bruce Wilson ran a brilliant 24:52 to take out the 4.4km M60 championship. Canberran Bob Chapman was equally as impressive in winning M70 in 29:56 while Rad Leovic, just back from a bronze medal in the World Duathlon, ran 36:07 to be best M75.
