2007-08 Mountain Running Series
The third season of the Kembla Joggers Mountain Running series starts at the beginning of September this year and goes through to the end of February 2008. The first season attracted only a handful of competitors but now up to 40 per event come along to tackle some of the toughest terrain the Illawarra has to dish up. Quite a few regulars even make the trek down from Sydney for the Series, which is also starting to get a lot of attention on running sites like Coolrunning.
The races cater for runners 15 years and over with each event starting on a staggered start system. This way you can choose to start off scratch, 5, 10 or 15 minutes, depending on your ability and how hard you want to run. The distances covered vary between 5 km to up to 35 km and all courses are run along the scenic but challenging Illawarra escarpment. The full program is listed below along with other events on the national mountain running calendar.
It is worth emphasising that these events are not for the faint hearted. All courses usually involve several steep climbs and ascents, rough unsealed tracks and the occasional narrow path. We don't recommend the longer events for novices, instead it may be worth trying the shorter races to get a taste of what its all about before taking on the longer distances.
