Jaggad Bush Capital Bush Marathon Festival
Campbell High School
Saturday 28 July 2007
Stunning record breaking performances by Jackie Fairweather, Elizabeth Bennett and Angela Bateup were the highlights of the 2007 Bush Capital Bush Marathon Festival. Fairweather, the former world triathlon and duathlon champion, ran 4hrs 47mins 13secs for the 60km ultra run to slash 32 minutes off the course record set by world rogaining champion Julie Quinn. She was second outright, only 3 minutes behind Australian 100km representative Tim Cochrane who ran 4:44:12, and showed she can be a medal contender in the World Long Distance Mountain Running Championship in Switzerland in 6 week's time. Simon Fairweather, the former Olympic archery gold medallist, now an accomplished long distance runner, was second male in 4:55:38 and Peter Thomas third in 5:21:42, while Kerrie Bremner was runner up in the women in 5:57:56 and Veronica Black third in 8:05:05.
Elizabeth Bennett, the ACT resident marathon champion, showed she was equally at home off road, taking 30 minutes off the female Bush Marathon record held by Australian representative Vanessa Haverd. Bennett clocked 3:16:50 for the 42kms, with Haverd second in a personal best 3:21:43 and Judi Barton third in 3:43:58. Tim Sawkins was the male marathon champion in 3:08:22, Tony Swan second in 3:10:04, and Wayne Crook third in 3:13:07.
Former national junior track star Angela Bateup led a record-breaking Yass trifecta of herself, Fleur Flanery and Narelle Patrick in the 25kms. All three, with times of 1:42:51, 1:55:38 and 1.57.58 respectively, became the first female runners to crash the two hour barrier. Geoff Hawke ran 1:40:46 to be fastest male, three minutes outside Vince Craig's record, with Paul Bruce of Berrima second in 1:41:11, and Gavin Keating third in 1:44:06.
James Minto and former Australian mountain running champion Judith May had comfortable victories in the most popular event, the 16 kms around Mt Ainslie and over the Majura-Ainslie ridge. Minto ran 1:04:41, with Sam Nelson second in 1:06:14 and Paco Iglesias third in 1.06.39. May clocked 1.17.10, with Julia Reed next in 1:19:12, and Shanyn Sparreboom third in 1:21:13.
The 5km run attracted top national class runners James Barker and Veronica Wallington, both of whom unfortunately strayed off course before nevertheless finishing in record times.
Thanks in very large part to the sponsorship of sports clothing company Jaggad and the support of Campbell High School and Canberra Nature Park management, a record field participated in the various events which are expected to raise a total of over $3,000 for the Australian mountain running team. A highlight of the race day was a donation of $500 to the team by visiting American running writer Willy Stern. Stern was inspired to assist by a chance discussion with Australian mountain running champion Scott McTaggart who has high hopes of a top twenty finish in this year's world championship. Stern, from Nashville, Tennessee, completed the Bush Marathon in 5:30:40 and enjoyed seeing kangaroos for the first time along the way. His goal is to complete a marathon on every continent, a feat he hopes to complete in 2009 when he has entered a marathon in Antarctica. The Bush Capital Bush Marathon meant Stern has completed marathons on five continents.
Many thanks to Jaggad, Campbell High School, Environment ACT, the Runners Shop and the many helpers on the day that contributed to the success of the event. For the third year in a row, weather conditions were near perfect, with a sunny day and an overnight low of 4 degrees climbing to 14 degrees during the day.
