BRICHACEK IN WORLD CLASS WIN
Weston Creek junior Emily Brichacek produced a world class performance to win today's ACT Mountain Running Championship on Mt Tennent. After completing the first 2 kms in just over 8 minutes with ACT long distance mountain running champion Angela Bateup and world junior mountain running bronze medallist Veronica Wallington, Brichacek built up a commanding lead over the 6km ascent of the mountain and reached the summit in 44 mins 12 secs. Bateup of Yass, who is representing Australia in the world long distance mountain running championship in England on 28 April, was second in 46:54, with Wallington of Canowindra, limited by a chest cold, third in 47:21. The Australian junior women's 5 kms on Mt Tennent on 10 May is expected to be the highlight of the national championships as competitors including Brichacek and Wallington vie to be members of the Australian team of three to defend their world championship title in Switzerland in September.
Australian representative Stephen Brown of Wollongong was victorious in the men's 11 km championship in 56:36. South Canberra Tuggeranong's Stuart Doyle was second in 57:24, securing the ACT resident title from David Osmond of North Canberra Gungahlin who ran 59.13. M55 world veteran mountain running champion Trevor Jacobs of Weston Creek won the resident bronze medal in 60.15.
