Canberra Times Fun Run winner Martin Dent, the City to Surf and Australian cross country running champion of Cook, heralded the start of Parks Week with a sizzling run in the Orroral Valley Classic in Namadgi National Park today. Running just over 3 minutes a kilometre on the flat sections and as quickly as 2:50 per kilometre downhill, Dent ran 1hr 5 mins 15 secs to slash over eight minutes from Vince Craig's course record. James Minto of Holt was runner up in 1:22:21 and M45 veteran George Mason third in 1:27:50.
Elizabeth Humphries of Lyneham had an outstanding debut on the course, finishing fastest female in 1:39:19. Amanda Solley of Torrens was second in 1:45:33 and W45 veteran Kelley Flood of Bonython was third in 1:46:50.
Records fell to internationals Trevor Jacobs and Kerry Bremner in the 32 km run. Jacobs, the 2006 M55 world veteran champion, of Latham, clocked 2:24:24 and will be one of the favourites for next Sunday's Brindabella Classic, a race he has won several times. Bremner of Nicholls, who contests the world 100 km road running championship in Italy in 4 weeks, set a new female course record of 2:41:50.
Alex Kearns of Barton won the 8 km event in 33:47, with Paul Stern of Campbell and Andrew Vogler of Watson tying for second in 37:30.
