Deep Space Mountain Marathon
Former Honeysuckle Creek Deep Space Tracking Station
Namadgi National Park ACT

Sunday 23 November

The ACT’s unseasonal blast of cold weather from the Antarctic provided icy conditions and snow running for competitors in today’s 44 km Deep Space Mountain Marathon from the former Honeysuckle Creek Tracking Station in Namadgi National Park. World mountain running representative Vanessa Haverd of Hackett, a CSIRO scientist, produced the run of the day to go close to winning the race outright. After overcoming the snow on the summit of Mt Tennent, Haverd reached the 25 km point back at Honeysuckle in second place to ultra running representative Tim Cochrane of Sydney, seven minutes in arrears. After losing a further two minutes changing her shoes to overcome some heel pain, Haverd produced a storming final 19 kilometres to gain around seven minutes and finish in 4 hrs 4 mins 29 secs, two minutes behind Cochrane, a medical doctor, who clocked 4:02:22. Nevertheless Cochrane was happy to finish in good shape after withdrawing from the run after 25 kms last year and is looking three weeks ahead when he hopes to successfully defend his 246 km Coast to Kosciusko title.

Dennis Haines of Gungahlin completed his first ever marathon to be second male in 4:35:23 and Noel Annett of Sydney was third, and first veteran, in 4:43:02.

World long distance mountain running representative Isobel Bespalov of Melbourne was second female in 4:19:48 and Sharon Harrison of Copacabana was third, and first veteran, in 5:05:40.

Benjamin Fanson of Sydney won the 25 km run in 2:24:48, with Brendan Davies of Sydney second in 2:25:56 and Tim Shillington of Weston third in 2:31:06. Yass runner Narelle Patrick was fastest female and second outright in 2:25:13, with Yarralumla W60 veteran Sue Archer runner up in 2:52:03.

The popular 19 km run was won by Daniel Gillespie of Palmerston in the ACT in 1:46:39 in a sprint finish from John Kennedy of Kambah in 1:46:56. Australian veteran orienteering champion Hugh Moore was third in 1:53:09. Jess Baker of Sydney was fastest female in 1:47:54, with Karen Brown of Palmerston second in 1:53:24 and Tracey Jobson of Monash third in 2:08:24.

Jessica Robson of Bruce was first finisher in the 8.4 km run in 49:00, with Nicole Tattam of Canada second in 59:21 and Leanne Harrison third in 1:01:47. Veteran orienteer Michael Burt was fastest male in 52:48.
