Mountain running back at Stromlo
Until the 2003 bush fires, the pine forests on Mt Stromlo were a training haven for Canberra’s distance runners for more than 40 years. In recent times Stromlo Forest Park has become Canberra’s mountain biking mecca, with the runners largely restricting themselves to the Robert DeCastella cross country circuit.
Mountain running returned to Stromlo today with the inaugural Stromlo Stomp, a 10.5 km double ascent of the mountain from the eastern and western sides, with 430 metres of climb, as the prelude to the Australian Cross Country Team Trials on the cross country track.
John Winsbury, best Australian male in the 2008 World Long Distance Mountain Running Championship, dominated the race, clocking 40 mins 5 seconds. He said he was very pleased with his performance as he is in full training and had completed a 30 km run on the previous day. Second placed fellow international Stuart Doyle took out the ACT Veterans Championship in 41:26 from Brindabella Classic champion David Hosking who ran 44:03. Trevor Jacobs, 2007 world M55 champion, was most impressive in finishing 5th outright in 45:14. The oldest runner in the field, Bob Chapman aged 74 years, won the M70 title in an outstanding 1:07:14.
The women’s race saw the return to competition of 2008 world long distance championship bronze medallist Angela Bateup. She triumphed in 45:17 after a close battle with fellow Australian representatives Vanessa Haverd, second in 45:30, and Fleur Flanery, third in 45:43. W50 runner Kathy Southgate, fifth outright in 52:03, was the most outstanding of the older runners.
