Flint, Burrell and Jones slash records

Australian marathon champion Lisa Flint took out the Australian Defence Force mountain running championship in winning the Mt Majura Vineyard Two Peaks 20 kms in record time. Flint, the 2009 Australian championship and Melbourne marathon winner with a personal best of 2 hrs 34 mins, ran 1:26:41 to lower the women’s course record by 6 minutes, and finish 4 minutes ahead of runner-up Scott Imhoff in 1:30:36. Imhoff was 4 minutes faster than his winning time last year. Second male was Caine Warburton in 1:33:18 and third Tony Swan in 1:35:08. Felicity Brown was second female in 1:49:29 and Jessica Robson third in 1:54:54.

In the Three Peaks 26 kms, top American mountain runner Galen Burrell led from start to finish to hold off Bush Marathon record breaker Alex Matthews by just over a minute. Burrell, a winner of the Pike’s Peak marathon, lowered the course record by 3 minutes in running 1:46:24, with Matthews second in 1:47:49. South Coast runner Damian Smith was third in 1:55:25. World Orienteering Championships representative Shannon Jones of the Canberra Cockatoos was fastest female in 2:07:06, a personal best and new course record by 5 minutes. Sandra Oliver was second in 2:24:25 and Cathy Crompton third in 2:24:41.

The inaugural One Peak 12 kms saw wins to Nick Horspool in 49:16 and Vanessa Haverd in 55:15. Haverd finished 7th in last month’s World Long Distance Mountain Running Championship in Austria. Travis Haslim was second male in 52:06 and Troy Steinman third in 1:22:06. Melissa Clarke finished second female in 1:08:10 and World Masters Orienteering Championships double gold medallist Jenny Lawford third in 1:13:11.

The record field of 154 finishers included 82 year old Rad Leovic who completed the 12 km course in 1:49:39. Last weekend Leovic successfully completed the run up all four mountains in the Bright Alpine Four Peaks.
