THREE SECONDS SEPARATE RECORD BREAKERS

Only three seconds separated the three place getters as John Winsbury, Alex Matthews and Stuart Doyle slashed 5 minutes off the Tour de Mountain 25 km race record at Mawson today. Australian mountain running representative Winsbury clocked 1:41:07, with Matthews just 1 second behind and Doyle another 2 seconds back.

The chilly early morning temperatures led to fast times all round as Angela Bateup, 3rd in the World Long Distance Mountain Running Championship in 2008 and 5th this year, took almost 3 minutes off Jackie Fairweather’s record in running 1:51:55. World Orienteering Championships representative Shannon Jones ran 1:53:40 to be also under the record and Vanessa Haverd, 7th in the World Long Distance Mountain Running Championship, was third in 1:54:59.

In the 17 km run, James Minto ran 1:13:09, a new record by 2 minutes. Wayne Corlis ran a 19 second personal best of 1:19:00 and Brett Schumacher 1:21:45 for third. Jessica Baird took out the women’s race in 1:19:55, Jeni Greenland was runner up in 1:48:53, and Jane Grey was third and first veteran in 1:51:29.

Shaun Archer improved on his second placing in 2008 to win the 9km run up and down Mt Taylor in 37:57, just outside the record, with promising junior Ryan Gibson second in 42:48 and Scott Wright third in 44:52. Bryony McConnell lowered the women’s record by a massive 15 minutes in clocking 45:26. Melanie Callaghan was second in 48:03 and Catherine Hanley third in 51:25.
