Haverd smashes long standing record
Australian mountain running representative Vanessa Haverd (pictured) on Saturday broke one of the oldest women’s distance running records in the book when she took out Saturdays’s Crackenback Challenge up the mountain at Thredbo. Haverd of Canberra clocked 22 mins 28 secs for the gruelling 2 km ascent, taking half a minute off the 1991 record set by Tasmania’s Louise Fairfax, who was arguably the top female uphill mountain runner in the world at the time.
Canberra runners dominated the event with Elizabeth Humphries running 30:27 to finish second to Haverd, and David Osmond, Anthony Scott and Stuart Doyle filling the men’s placings. For Osmond, a former Australian mountain running champion, and winner of the last two Alpine Four Peaks events in Victoria, it was his 15th win from 18 starts but he was disappointed to run 20:18, his slowest time since his first victories as a teenager. Scott, also a former national champion and now an M45 veteran veteran, ran 20:49, just managing to hold off another former Australian representative, Stuart Doyle, who clocked 21:01.
