World 48 hour ultra distance running champion Martin Fryer relished the torrential rain as he overcame a strong start by orienteer Chris Helliwell to take out today’s ACT Veterans Mountain Running Championship on Mt Stromlo. Despite the slippery fire trail surface in some sections of the course, Fryer completed the 10.4 kms in 43 mins 38 secs, with Helliwell second in 44:43 and Wollongong’s Phil Whitten third in 46:13.

World Orienteering Championships representative Shannon Jones backed up from winning the ACT 10,000 m track championship on Thursday to run a two minute personal best on Mt Stromlo. She was first female in 46:19, with Louise Sharp second in 51:44 and Bryony McConnell third in 55:42.

The Australian Veterans Mountain Running Championships will be part of the Australian Mountain Running Championships carnival on Mt Tennent in Namadgi National Park on 22 May.
