Australian Mountain Running Championships

ACT runners Scott McTaggart and Vanessa Haverd lived up to their pre-race favouritism as they took out today’s Australian Mountain Running Championships on Mt Tennent in the ACT in cool, sunny still weather conditions. It was a record 5th win for McTaggart as he completed the 11 km open men’s race with 1000 metres of climb in 54.40. Stephen Brown of Kembla Joggers, a 6-time Australian mountain running representative, matched paces with McTaggart for the first half of the run before finishing 2nd in 57.57. Albury’s Adam Byles, the Nail Can Hill race winner and a former 1.52 800m track star, was a close 3rd in 58.13.
Vanessa Haverd took out her first national title, completing the open women’s 8 kms in 46.25. Ellie O’Kane from Albury was second in 48.56 and Deahne Turnbull from Queensland third in 51.02.
The junior men’s title went to David Bayley from Melbourne in 41.44, with Ben Duffus from QLD second in 44.23 and Ben Buckingham from Wodonga third in 44.35.
Sutherland Athletics Club’s Lauren Parsons and Audrey Amiya-Hall finished first and second in the junior girl’s 6kms in 42.14 and 46.33 respectively, with Madison Sternbeck-Rutter from Batemans Bay third in 51.59.
Former world veterans champion Trevor Jacobs won the Masters 6 kms in 39.33 from Steve Bradford and Peter Clarke. Susan Archer was the Women’s Masters race winner in 48.45 from Cathy Crompton in 49.22 and Elizabeth Short in 51.16.
