MID NORTH COAST CROSS COUNTRY – MOUNT CORAMBA, COFFS HARBOUR NSW SUNDAY 15/8/2010
By Steel Beveridge
Mount Coramba has new rulers after the running on Sunday of the annual King and Queen of that particular peak. Tim Abbotts is the newly crowned king while Michelle Pearson is the new Queen. Neither has won the event before. Abbotts completed the up and back, or rather up and down, journey in 42.59 showing how the hills around Bellingen have contributed to his uphill ability with the fastest up time of 25.54. His descent time of 17.05 kept him clear of a hard-charging Richard Pearson who came down the mountain in the fastest down time of 16.04 to claim the runner-up position. Third went to Tony Woolford whose down time was only one second slower than King Tim’s.
Michelle Pearson was second fastest woman up the mountain behind Regan Pullen but careered downhill to win by just over a minute in 52.54. Pullen held on to her comfortable buffer to finish as runner-up with Tina Thompson rounding out the podium.
In all twenty four runners ascended and descended the full distance with only Matthew Berrington who was probably running to coach’s instructions recording a positive split.
In the supporting events Daniel Campbell and Stephanie Mann posted wins in the 4 kms while Paul Gagliardi and Hayley Millington did likewise in the 2 kms. Both shorter events involved an up-and-down format as well.
Second in the 4 kms were Taylor Wicks and Fiona Bagley with Jeff O’Brien and Anthea Martin rounding out the placings for that event.
Kerrod Parker and Hannah Guy were the runners-up in the 2 kms with James Lee and Adelia Smit filling the minors.
Next week sees the Mid North Coast Series return to the coast at Mullawarra.
