Deep Space Mountain Marathon
Former Honeysuckle Creek Deep Space Tracking Station
Namadgi National Park ACT
Sunday 7 November 2010
Sydney’s Brendan Davies (pictured), an Australian representative at this year’s World Long Distance Mountain Running Championship, took advantage of the misty rain and cool weather to lower the Deep Space Mountain Marathon record of 3.43.01 set in 2009 by world 48 hour running champion Martin Fryer. Davies set off at a cracking pace and passed through the 25 km point 12 minutes ahead of the field in 2.02.01 before maintaining the effort through to the finish in 3.42.44. The 44 km course included 1800m of ascent, including peaks of Mt Tennent and the Orroral ridge and low points in the Appollo Road and Orroral valleys.
Leura runner Mick Donges felt right at home in the Blue Mountains like conditions and terrain and was also under 4 hours in clocking 3.59.11. Nowra’s Damian Smith was still a bit leg weary from a long race a fortnight earlier but an enormous dish of pasta at the campground the night before proved to be the right fuel for a good 3rd placing in 4.19.38. A highlight of the day was the performance of legendary American marathon runner and race organiser Brent Weigner, now 61 years old, in completing the distance in 6.19.12. Weigner has run marathons on all continents, including the Antarctic and North Pole races.
Dual Six Foot Track champion Vanessa Haverd of Canberra (pictured), 7th in the World Long Distance Mountain Running Championship in 2008, paced herself comfortably over the first two thirds of the course before powering home in a personal best of 4.03.05. Times clocked in the Deep Space race are similar to those run at Six Foot Track and second placed Louise Sharp was ecstatic to follow up her 3.26 run in the Fitzroy Falls marathon with a 4.12.23. Bryony McConnell moved up from the 25 km run last year to the full marathon this year and ran a strong 4.39.41 to be third fastest female.
For the second year in succession Arvid Streiman from Kirribilli in Sydney took out the 25 km run to Mt Tennent and back, running 2.18.02, with Brett Schumacher second in 2.20.43 and Malcolm Brown third in 2.26.58. Samantha Gash from Pyrmont in Sydney was fastest female in 2.54.17, with Outward Bound’s Laura Marshall second in 3.01.52.
Australia’s two top junior male orienteers Ian Lawford and Lachlan Dow took the quinella in the 19 km run to the Orroral Valley bridge and back, Lawford running 1.31.51 and Dow a two minute personal best of 1.32.50, with veteran Richard Juckes third in 1.42.50. In a great mountain running performance Kym Chisholm clocked 1.42.00 and smashed the women’s course record by 6 minutes. Last year’s winner Cathy Crompton was second and fastest W50 in 1.53.20, with Allison Kirkby third in 2.01.28. Two outstanding veteran race walkers Monika Short and Geoff Barker produced magnificent efforts to walk 2.28.35 and 2.33.24 respectively, smashing the old walking record of 2.43 by Peter Hogan.
Scott Wright won the 8.4 km run to the Orroral Ridge and back in 46.18, with Yogesh Mulye second in 56.32 and Stephen Adams third in 59.12. Kate Johnson was fastest female in 52.01, from Marie Janczura in 56.32 and Amber Reiman in 1.03.44. Michael Burt walked the distance in 1.09.09.

Lost property: a pair of Black Diamond gloves and a North Face water bottle were left behind at the race.
