Orroral Valley Classic
Namadgi National Park ACT
Wednesday 26 January 2011
Weather: 20 degrees, light showers every 15 minutes or so.
The traditional 20 km course from the former Orroral Valley Space Tracking Station up the western side of the Orroral Valley on Cotter Hut Road and back via the grass walking track was unavailable due to high grass growth from the substantial rains experienced during December. So an out and back course was used on Cotter Hut Road.
Former Australian mountain running champion David Osmond led from the start and cruised to a 1.23.13 win, well short of the 1.05.15 course record set some years ago by Martin Dent. He was followed in by Elizabeth Humphries who had a personal best of 1.39.19 on the old course. Such has been her improvement during the last 12 months that she took almost 11 minutes off this in running 1.28.42. This was in part prompted by a cracking pace from the start by Louise Sharp, who ended up 3rd outright and second female in 1.29.19.
Second male was Aaron Rannsley in 1.29.53, with Nick Atkin 3rd in 1.31.04. Third female was Kym Chisholm, another improver, in 1.39.07.
Tony Henshaw has been running for many years and had never cracked a win until he took out the 8 km Orroral run in 46.27. Another over 50 age grouper Mike Siers was second in 47.02 and William Arthur (M60) was third in 53.32. Kathleen Swann ran 47.32 to be fastest female.
