Queensland’s Lucy Blaber, 3rd female in the Six Foot 45 km Marathon in March, was Australia’s sole representative this year in the World Long Distance Mountain Running Championship in Slovenia in a field of 600 runners.
Lucy finished 29th female with her splits was very competitive in the two big mountain climbs but not having the same speed on the downhills as the top women. This augurs well for Lucy in uphill mountain running championships in future years.
Lucy commented on the toughness of the course: ‘It was so unbelievably tough- can’t even describe it! A lot of it was on tiny very rocky goat tracks which I just couldn’t run on properly & the mountains (rocky alpine peaks up in the clouds & wind!!) were like nothing I ever have seen- I was literally scared for my life! I had to walk a lot (& I have never walked in my life!) & was basically scrambling on my hands & knees during that 7 km rise in the middle! Looking up at those mountain peaks in the clouds I actually felt it was humanly impossible & definitely physically impossible for me based on my training & experience!’
