Jacobs rediscovers mojo on Mt Stromlo in Stromlo Stomp

Former world veterans mountain running champion Trevor Jacobs has been hampered by a dodgy knee for the last 12 months or so. However, a tapering freshen up for the cancelled Six Foot Track 45 km appeared to have worked wonders in re-discovering the old mountain running mojo as Jacobs produced the run of the day in the ACT Veterans Mountain Running Championship in today’s Stromlo Stomp 11 kms, which included two ascents of Mt Stromlo and 440 metres of climb. Jacobs clocked 49.52 to be fastest M60 and 3rd fastest veteran, behind M40 runners George Pagotelis (48.21) and Alistair McClusky (48.37).

The outright male and female winners were 31 year old Haydon Gray (48.00) and Vanessa Haverd (50.49), with Haverd another in top form after priming herself for a third victory at Six Foot Track, called off after treacherous conditions made the Cox’s River impassable. The prolonged rain in Canberra actually improved the runnability of the well drained Mt Stromlo forest trails as the trail surfaces had improved traction.

Age group winners in the 11 km were M40 George Pagotelis 48.21, M45 Stephen Graham 56.13, M50 Peter Thomson 56.53, M55 Steve Bradford 51.04, M60 Trevor Jacobs 49.52, W35 Bryony McConnell 56.16, W40 Elle Knight 1.00.52, W45 Leane Harrison 1.08.29, W50 Prue Bradford 1.19.39, and W55 Catherine Hanley 1.00.30.

A 6.5 km run to the summit and back saw Susan Archer take out the W60 title in 35.52 from race walking Monika Short (45.13) and Caroline Campbell the W65 title in 42.09. M40 Finn Marsland won the race in 29.41 from 15 year old Hamish Roberts in 30.04 and brilliant 10 year old Olivia Martin in 31.50.
