Cochrane and Quinn take out Deep Space Mountain Marathon

Weather: Still, sunny, 3 degrees at 6.30am, 15 degrees at 10.30am.

Sydney ultra runner Tim Cochrane has been runner up in past Deep Space Marathons but this year dominated the race to achieve an outstanding win in 3.18.00 in perfect still, sunny, cool conditions. Brett Eason was 2nd in 3.37.54 and Vince Craig improved 6 minutes on last year to finish 3rd in 3.43.23. World rogaining champion Julie Quinn was only 3 minutes outside the women’s course record in clocking 4.08.44 with another well known ultra runner Bryony McConnell second in 4.34.52 and Ariane McCormack 3rd in 4.45.56 after running all the way with husband Matt.

International orienteers Matt and Grace Crane smashed the half marathon course records. Matt reached the mostly downhill halfway point at the Orroral Tracking Station in only 41.20 and then managed the return in 45.13 to run 1.26.33. Junior international orienteer Olle Poland clocked 43.45 to halfway and 50.14 for the uphill return to finish second in 1.33.59 while another former junior orienteering international Josh Blatchford had only 4 hours sleep after a drive from Sydney before finishing 3rd in 1.40.59.

Grace Crane ran 1.52.11 to take out the women’s race, with Kym Chisholm having one of her best runs in 1.59.47 for second and former orienteering international Belinda Allison third in 2.01.08.

Jamie Currie won the inaugural 10 km in 48.10 from Scott Wright and Trevor Jacobs. World Mountain Running Championship representative Melissa Clarke ran an outstanding 48.55 to finish 3rd outright in 48.55 after leading the whole field off at the start. Bianca Mauch was 2nd in 54.43 and Amy Currie 3rd in 57.36.

Jackson Jones won the inaugural 5 km run in 23.54 from Zachary Peddle and Jacob McDonnell, with Marie Patrick fastest female in 31.46 from Lucie Patrick and Tiffany Peddle.

The most outstanding walks of the day were by Geoff Barker who was fastest in the half marathon walk in 2.49.54 and Monika Short who was fastest female in the 10 km walk in 1.19.39.
