DENT AND SEIBOLD DOMINATE AUSTRALIAN MOUNTAIN RUNNING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Olympic marathon runner Martin Dent celebrated his selection on 21 May in the marathon team for the World Track and Field Championships in Moscow this year with a virtuoso running performance at the Australian Mountain Running Championships on Mt Stromlo today. He sizzled through the first lap of 4 km in 14 mins 30 secs, and showed his marathon stamina to only slow a little over the next two laps to complete the 12 km in 45.34. Fellow ACT runner Mark Bourne, the Empire State Building Run Up and Taipei International Tower stair race champion, finished 2nd in 46.54 with Victoria’s Nick Wightman coming through the field to collect 3rd in 47.59.

The open women’s 8 kms saw a repeat of the dominant 2011 Australian Championship win in Brisbane by Victoria’s Kate Seibold. She built up a lead of almost a minute on the rest of the field at the end of the first lap and increased it on the second lap to win in 38.18. Novice runner Brooke Williams of Victoria showed her talent in finishing second in 39.51, with another surprise packet, Emma Kraft of Alice Springs, finishing 3rd in 40.29.

The ACT had much to rejoice in the Junior Men’s 8 km Championship as Bryce Anderson, an ACT running and orienteering representative, paced himself brilliantly to go from 4th at the end of the first lap to victory at the finish in the fast time of 33.19. Biniyam Hagos of Tasmania was 2nd in 33.59 and Charlie Hunter of NSW 3rd in 34.22. The Junior Women’s 4 km Championship went to Helen Baade of QLD in 19.51, with Clare Hodgart of Victoria 2nd in 20.45 and Tori Jones of NSW 3rd in 21.00.
