Former Australian mountain running representatives John Winsbury and Louise Sharp both had dynamic runs in winning the 2013 Deep Space Mountain Marathon in Namadgi National Park. The course was two laps of a half marathon from the former Honeysuckle Deep Pace Tracking Station to the former Orroral Valley Tracking Station and return and had 1300m elevation gain for the marathon.
Winsbury showed he meant business right from the start. He relished the zero wind chill conditions and powered through half way in 1.28.42, before finishing the marathon in 3.11.02, just outside his 2011 course record of 3.09.34. It was a magnificent and satisfying comeback from his lost year in 2012 when he was hospitalised for some weeks with a collapsed lung when he was on the verge of representing Australia in the World Long Distance Mountain Running Championship. Rising mountain running star Tom Brazier, only 23, was second in 3.26.14. Former Olympic archery gold medallist Simon Fairweather, now a veteran 44 year old, ran as well as he has ever done with a strong 3.37.56 for third.
Louise Sharp also ran strongly from the start and continued to impress throughout the marathon with her stamina up the hills and speed in striding out on the downhills. She went through halfway in 1.57.31 and had hopes of breaking 4 hours until fatigue from racing the Bright Alpine Four Peaks on the previous weekend set in. In clocking 4.04.26, she did break her own course record of 4.05.11 set in 2011. Maria Donghue was second in 4.39.29 and Justine Medin third in 4.52.44.
There was a New Zealand double victory in the half marathon. Nick Horspool was fastest male in 1.30.29 from Stuart Doyle in 1.31.37 and Luke Schofield in 1.40.47, while orienteering international Lizzie Ingham dominated the women’s race with an outstanding 1.48.17, from fellow orienteer Sarah Buckerfield in 1.53.59 and Two Peaks winner Alex Orme in 1.54.16.
Nineteen year old Damiano Luzzi entered the half marathon but changed his mind and swapped to the 10 km, putting in a fast 48.46 on the hilly, continually up and down course. Veteran David Clark was second in 53.40 and Adam Rumbold third in 54.07. Kym Chisholm, a noted performer over the longer distances, also chose the 10 km and had a narrow win in 52.02 from Helen Morewood who did 52.18. Tegan Geale was third in 57.05. The 5km attracted only 3 starters in the forecast wet conditions and was won by Sophia Gordon in 35.59 from Emma Carroll in 37.37 and Jane Hiatt in 51.22.
