Canberra’s 2014 protracted heat wave of many days above 30 degrees finally ended on Friday 14 February, bringing a forecast of heavy rain for the Stromlo Stomp on Saturday the 15th. Fortunately the Pavilion at Stromlo Forest Park provides good shelter for such conditions and all race administration and race finishes were re-located to shelter in the upper level. All 3 races (6.3 km, 11 km and 22 km) started at 7am in fine but overcast conditions and the rain held off until 8.15am.

The first runner back in 37.18 was 11 year old Ella Cuthbert in the 6.3km run to the Mt Stromlo summit and return. She held off M65 veteran Hugh Moore who took out the M65 championship in 37.59 from power walking Geoff Barker who walked 47.47, spurred on by W65 walker Monika Short who was ahead of him until the last couple of strides. Amazing W70 Des Butler ran 44.18 with a quick downhill return from the summit.

The 11 km race incorporated the ACT Veterans Mountain Running Championships for under 65 year olds. A 22 km double lap of the 11 km course was added to the program after the planned Mt Rob Roy 22 km on 2 February had to be postponed to 23 March because of the extremely hot weather and Six Foot Track competitors were looking for a tough mountain hit out. 22 km participants had their 11 km turnaround time recorded and included in the 11 km results for the purpose of deciding Veterans Championship results.

Luke Schofield was the 1st 11 km runner back in 46.19, followed by 22 km entrants Tom Brazier in 48.00, Paul Cuthbert (1st M40) in 49.21 and Martin Fryer (1st M50) in 50.17. Darren Blackhurst was 1st M45 in 51.06 and Trevor Jacobs 1st M60 in 57.04.

Talented 17 year old Nikki Armstrong was fastest female in the 11 km in 54.36, with Bryony McConnell taking out the W40 championship in finishing 2nd in 55.40. Kate Vandenberg was 3rd in 57.55. Anita Scherrer was the W45 champion in 1.02.15, Leanne Harrison W50 champion in 1.06.13, and Celia Challender W35 champion in 1.06.25.

Tom Brazier continued his record of successes in trail runs over the last 6 months by taking out the 22 km race in 1.38.04, only slowing 2 minutes during his second lap despite battling rain and wind. Paul Cuthbert was 2nd in 1.40.07 and former World Games orienteering champion Grant Bluett was 3rd in 1.45.10. Top national Masters orienteer champion Anita Scherrer was fastest female in 2.09.01 from Maria Donoghue in 2.12.08. Celia Challender held off a fest finishing Pam Muston to take 3rd in 2.15.09.
