This event seems to have been jinxed. Firstly it had to be-rescheduled from 2 February after a heat wave of 39 degrees days resulted in fire bans. Then the start/finish had to be moved from the Calwell sports fields to Calwell shopping centre after the sports fields were closed for pre-winter season maintenance. Finally 2 days before the race deep trenches were dug in a key section of the course for electricity infrastructure work. Fortunately it was fairly easy to modify the route to out and back courses with a loop up and over Mt Rob Roy. On race day this resulted in courses of 8 km, 16.7 km and 23.3 km.

John Power had a commanding win in the 23.3 km run in 1.52.18. In 2013 Tom Brazier ran the 22.8 km course in 1.48.46 so a very similar performance. Brett Easton was 2nd in 1.57.29 and Pierre-Francois Loos 3rd in 1.58.51.

New Zealand’s Alice Bates was fastest female in 2.08.12, much faster than the 2013 2.13.01 win by Alison Jones. Kym Chisholm edged out Jodie Barker for 2nd, running 2.12.01, Barker 30 seconds behind.

The 16.7 km race went to Craig McConnochie in 1.21.11, quite a bit faster than the 1.31.13 for 17 km by Shaun Ton in 2013. M40 Lance Purdon and M50 Sandy Lolicato were the impressive place getters in 1.22.35 and 1.23.15 respectively. W45 Elle Knight was fastest female in 1.40.27 with W50 Judith Pogson 2nd in 1.49.21 and W35  Lisa Testoni 3rd in 2.00.28.

Outstanding junior orienteer Ciaran Lane, 16, blitzed the 8 km in 35.52, with M40 Scott Nielsen 2nd in 38.11 and Richard Nethersole 3rd in 38.17. Susan Tarplee was fastest female in 44.35, with W40 Clare Newman 2nd in 45.16 and Nicole Clout 3rd in 47.50.

M65 Geoff Barker had a very strong performance in finishing fastest 16.7 km walker in 2.16.59, closely followed by M45 John Brown in 2.19.43. W45 ladies Maree Winmill and Jude King were fastest females in 3.01.07 and 3.02.03 respectively. W65 Monika Short walked a very quick 8 km in 1.04.16.
