LATE ENTRY INFORMATION

Please enter online on the Australian Mountain Running Association website www.mountainrunning.coolrunning.com.au where there is a link to secure online registration at https://www.registernow.com.au/secure/Register.aspx?ID=12165

This closes at 12 noon on Saturday 10 May. Late entries on race day will only be accepted up to 45 minutes before race start time.

CHAMPIONSHIPS PREVIEW

The senior men’s 11 kms should be a terrific contest between 2012 Australian champion Jordan Harries, 2013 world stair racing champion Mark Bourne, 2014 ACT champion Alan Craigie, and Australian representatives Nick Wightman and Ben Duffus.

The senior women’s race features former world orienteering champion Hanny Allston, who ran a sensational time in winning the 2014 Six Foot Track 45 km, Kate Siebold who has blitzed the women’s field in her only 2 Australian Mountain Running Championships, NSW champion Audrey Amiya-Hall,  former world top 10 junior Bronwyn Humphrys and highly performed QLD trail runner Harriet Smith. Unfortunately the NT’s Emma Kraft, the first Australian finisher at the 2013 World Mountain Running Championship, is a withdrawal following an illness picked up in a recent trip to the USA.

Current Australian junior men’s champion Bryce Anderson of the ACT is tipped to successfully defend his title. The junior women’s 6 km race is wide open with 6 contenders.

Getting there and Parking

Please download the instructions and map at http://www.coolrunning.com.au/calendar/public_html/2014/2014e007.pdf

There will be a Mountain Run sign at Tharwa, at the Apollo Road turn off, on Apollo Road with 200 metres to go, and on Apollo Road at the Mt Tennent fire trail gate. The gate must be kept closed at all times. Please close the gate once you are though.
You will then follow the fire trail 500m down a hill and cross a shallow creek crossing. After 200m, 4WD or AWD vehicles will park in a grassy lane way on the left, while 2WD vehicles will drive another 60 metres and park next to the fence on the right hand side.

Pre-race check in

All competitors must check in and receive their race numbers at least 30 minutes before the start time of their races. All competitors must report to the official at their start line at least 5 minutes before the start of their races for a compulsory pre-start briefing. It is a 200m to 400m walk from the parking area to the start so leave for the start at least 10 mins before your start time.

Race refreshment stations

Water and sports drink will be available at the start, after 2.5 km (the turn-around point for the open men’s 11 km), and at the finish at the summit. There will also be soft drink and muesli bars at the finish, and back near the registration tent when you come back down the mountain.

Course hazards and recommended footwear

The course is on a very well maintained 4WD fire trail as there is a fire tower on the summit.  It includes some sections of quite steep uphill, some of which have surfaces that may be loose or slippery under foot when you are coming back down after finishing. Recommended shoes are lightweight trail running shoes with very good grip such as Inov8’s.

Weather forecast for Sunday: rain, come prepared

See http://www.weatherzone.com.au/act/act/canberra

SATURDAY: 4 to 16 degrees. Cloudy.  Isolated showers.  Winds north to northwesterly and light.

SUNDAY: 6 to 18 degrees. Partly cloudy.  Isolated showers in the morning. Patchy morning fog.  Winds west to northwesterly and light becoming south to southeasterly during the morning.

Transport of clothing to the summit

Once you finish at the summit, it is the responsibility of every competitor (unless injured) to make their own way back down the mountain (6km). When you finish on the summit, there is a strong chance that there will be raining, that there will be windy, and it will be very cold. There may also be fog.

So you should provide a bag of gear (including warm jacket, dry T shirt, beanie, gloves) to be transported to the summit. There will be only 2 vehicles driving to the summit. Vehicle 1 will depart at 8.30am and vehicle 2 at 9.45am. Please ensure your clearly identified bag is in one of these vehicles at least 5 minutes before it is due to depart.
