BRICHACEK SMASHES BLACK MOUNTAIN RUN UP RECORD TO WIN RACE OUTRIGHT
Black Mountain Run Up, Tuesday 19 September
Thirty years ago former Australian cross country and marathon champion Rosemary Longstaff became the first female runner to finish first outright in an ACT distance running race, beating all the males home. Rosemary did this in the annual CSIRO fun run on a very hilly 6km loop course in Black Mountain reserve.
In a touch of irony with a mix of destiny, junior star Emily Brichacek, the Australian under 16 3000m track record holder, used Black Mountain reserve as her stage to trounce the men’s field in today’s Black Mountain Run Up. Brichacek clocked 12 mins 49 secs, to slash exactly one minute off the course record set by Australian representative Jessamy Hosking, and be only one minute slower than the record set a few months earlier by men’s international Stuart Doyle. Conditions were far from perfect, with the temperature hitting 26 degrees and a mild headwind for the first 800 metres.
Jenny Brichacek was second female in 15:09 and visiting Melbourne runner Lauren Williams third in 17:38.
ACT Masters Sports Star of the Month Trevor Jacobs, first M50 and 21st overall in the World Long Distance Mountain Running Championship in August, just held off 2005 Australian veteran cycling champion Simon Claringbold (4th M45 in the World Veteran Duathlon Championship in 2005). Jacobs clocked 13:09 and Claringbold 13:10. Luke Schofield was third in 13:20. Inspirational super veterans Rad Leovic (79 years of age) and Caroline Campbell (63) clocked 24:09 and 22:24 respectively.
